We just signed Prince Fielder on a 9 year $214mil contract...
We're going for the World Series this year boys!
Giants fans are celebrating today because Lincecum signed a 2 year deal for $40mil,
I am glad to see both my of my teams Detroit and San Francisco are stepping up this year

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
Oh right - I forgot the people outside of the states don't know much about baseball.
Well I don't want to confuse you so I will keep it simple. The world series is just a way of saying "national champions" its just another title game like in every other sport.
The Major League Baseball teams are divided into two leagues (the American League and the National League) they compete in 168 games a year and somewhere around the halfway point there is an "all-star game" where the best players from both leagues play each other.
Whoever wins the All-Star game (national or american league) gets "home field advantage" in the playoffs where they will play most of the games in with-in their league in the finals. An example of this would be the National League winning the All Star game and the Giants (NL) having home field advantage of the Rangers(AL)
---------------------------------------------------
ok i've probably lost you haha - the short and sweet is the world series is played in the US and is the name of the Final Series of the baseball year

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
Brief History lesson:
The World Series is the final matchup in American baseball (the league is called Major League Baseball) between the 2 best teams in the National League and the American League. The series can last up to 7 games, so that it is best 4 of 7. Whoever wins the most games wins the Championship.
The World Series takes place at the two competitors' home fields; they will switch off every few games. So in simple terms, it depends on who's competing.
Edit: Corwin, you beat me to it . And that is a better explanation.

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
Guys I know exactly what Baseball is how it is played and even how many innings it has, end of this and that I also know just as I know the difference between 1st,2,3 down and 4th in Football.
My question was WHO IN THE WORLD IS TAKING PART, ANSWER : USA,USA,USA,USA so dont call it WORLD if it does not involve the planet or at least 2 other countries.
Like Cricket WORLD cup, involves 16 other countries etc.
So your explaination to rather call it National champs, makes more sense.
PS Just pulling your legs a bit here, ha ha

Hahaha he brought up cricket. I never got that game. Or vuvuzelas, they just make your ears bleed. (had to throw that in for South Africa haha)
Technically it could be world series, we do have a Canadian team.

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
LOL yeah the Vuvuzela that comes from the Antelope horn KUDUzela, is a real symphony - NOT.
Those things are luckily not used in Rugby games but only the sport generally more supported by the black community, it is in their culture to make noise, whether it be by Vuvuzela or airhorn, generally in Soccer (football) matches.
All good. When you have grown a set of .... take off the body armour and play rugby, the team from the USA was actually one of my favorite teams to support during the previous WORLD cup. They have come a long way and will do even better in the Future.
When you look at sports like football and basketball, seeing that so few countries actually play it, best to look at the Olympics. In that regard I know many have baskletball teams that they send to the Olympics but maybe dont have enough club teams to compete against USA's """world series""".
2008 - Beijing
BASKETBALL
United States
118–107
Spain
In 2004 USA came 3rd, so shows there are some other players out there.
BASEBALL
In the 5 years that this was played at the Olympics USA won it only once (2000 - Sydney). CUBA won it 3 times with South Korea the most recent champion in 2008.
So this to me is the real World series.

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
my response to the baseball thing is that last season almost 90% of the Detroit Tigers were from Southern and Central America - off of the tropics, or somewhere south of Texas (in other Us territories) --- now carry that over to other teams you'll see a lot of the same thing but with Japanese and Chinese players, and again southern players.
my point is that while Baseball is a huge sport in the US, Americans are only a small fraction of the population that play the sport today so our olympic talent pool is much smaller, and I read somewhere that while we have players like Delmon Young, Josh Hamilton, Prince Fielder, etc. We are most likely going to start going after younger players to keep the amateur aspect in the olympics.

Ha ha yes true but USA and Canada doesnt make up the entire globe. This would be like us here playing against Swaziland rugby and then calling a WORLD series, not true.
Also doesnt matter whether players in the teams are from other countries.
So for me the best country in the WORLD playing baseball is South Korea.
hahahaha
Nice also to notice the HARLEM GLOBE TROTTERS only trots in the USA?

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
lol, I think you have it sort of wrong eries. If I create a sport that is open to the world to join, a sport that I'm better at playing than anyone in the world, and I call it a world championship, it's not my fault the world doesn't compete.ZAR Eries wrote:lol Pulling your leg there, just showing that a name to something doesnt mean its true.
Your suggesting that a world championship is only such a thing if the entire world joins, and if that were true then no so-called world championship would actually be a world championship because no sport would have every country represented.
Any country in good standing who can field a multi-million dollar team and abides by the rules of Major League Baseball can compete is the point. No one said Japan can't compete, they choose not to. If they did try to compete it would be very difficult because they are used to playing a slightly different type of baseball and are smaller players. The point being that MLB is the pinnacle of the sport. There are no better players/teams in the world at this game, hence the title "World Series" and World Championship.

So why if the pinacle of the sport lies in the US do they suck when the olympics comes, is it maybe because all of the players will fail dope tests?
Just asking.

Olympics = The best at the sport that can be offered.
Looks and sounds like ONLY baseball is making a mockery of the Olympics then? I mean for all the other sports only the best compete. Dont know, interesting discussion.
Imagine Usain saying, naaaa I rather run in the World series, in Jamaica, where only Jamaica, Bali and Afganistan compete.
Nope guys, get off those horses, Baseball is ruled by another country, you have lost your favorite sport the Korea .... if you want to claim the be the best you must go and beat the rest, dont simply say, "Yeah but they dont want to come here ... " Go there beat the living crap out of them and then boast, until then MLB's top prize would simply remain a cup bought at your local wall mart.
Bahahahahaha

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
I can see you really don't understand and are not giving MLB the proper credit here. To give you an idea of how good they are, the Japan league (NPB) only allows a maximum of 4 American MLB players per one of their teams. The MLB players that go over to Japan are often lower skilled players or on the verge of retirement typically. That is to say, they may have been great players but are on the down side.ZAR Eries wrote:Olympics = The best at the sport that can be offered.

As for the Olympics, America played by the rules for a very long time using non-professional athletes. These were high caliber amatuer college athletes who depending on the sport were the best in the world. When the Olympic committee final caved into the reality and dirty little secret that many communist/socialist countries were unfairly fielding professional athletes paid for and supported by the state, they slowly began to change the rules allowing pro athletes from the West to compete. When the NBA All-Stars came to the Olympics it was a mockery. They crushed everyone with the "dream team." The same would happen with MLB. Why? Because they are the best in the world at the game they play.
I think it is you who has to step off your high horse because you obviously don't know what you are talking about when it comes to baseball.

Re: The World Will End in 2012!!!!
Well I agree with Don you are a little weak in your argument - as a player myself, a part time coach, and a avid baseball fan of both american and national league teams I watch a lot of baseball and spend a lot of money learning how to better understand it/and build upon both the principals and the logic of both marketing and playing the game so I can one day make a career out of it (I plan too after college at least).
WIth that being said I think arguing semantics is a waste of time. The fact that we change out the word National with World when it comes to championship is a dedication to the sport and the fact that players from all around the world come to America to play and it truly is a diverse culture amongst the teams that gives us the ability to take such high standards in our play.
Secondly you would be naive to think that baseball players are still using drugs as much, but let me say that yes it does happen and it is a plague in the game that will always exist. But most of the talent is trying to bring back a pure style of play because of all of the lawsuits, hall of fame markouts, and fines that occur during the play.
Further more MLB ratings are lower now that drugs are no longer a factor making huge batting averages and home run counts - so they are trying to appeal to the fans by recruiting talent from all all over the world. ---If you want to argue that athletes are still using drugs you can look to other leagues all you want - but in America arguing semantics and discounting our players mentality wont get you far.
